Call for Papers

The Atlantic City Convention Center

Autism New Jersey’s Annual Conference is one of the nation’s largest autism-related conferences, drawing record crowds of parents and professionals.  We invite you to read the following Call for Papers information and consider submitting a proposal for the 2012 Conference.

Online submission:

Autism New Jersey 30th Annual Conference 2012 Call for Papers is now available.

Deadline for submissions:  Friday, January 13, 2012

Click here to submit on line.

Notification:

The lead presenter will be notified of the status of the proposal via e-mail or phone, and, should the proposal be approved, the workshop date and time slot.

Presenters:

Planning on submitting more than one proposal? Each lead presenter may submit up to three proposals.  Each proposal must be submitted separately.

Each proposal may have no more than three listed presenters.

All presenters agree to refrain from making potentially disparaging comments during the presentation.

Please be advised Autism New Jersey reserves the right to videotape and/or photograph all sessions. (Your consent will be solicited on-site.)

Process:
Information should be completed by the lead presenter as he/she will be the contact person for all conference correspondence. Please carefully read all instructions, even if you have made a previous submission, as each year’s instructions may change.

A confirmation letter stating that your proposal has been received will be sent to the lead presenter upon submission.

A review committee comprised of professionals and parents will choose the presentations.  Each proposal will be evaluated by at least three reviewers.  For a list of committee members, please e-mail Suzanne Buchanan at sbuchanan@autismnj.org.

Workshop Details:

Workshops are 90-minute sessions. You may request a two-part workshop, but Autism New Jersey will limit the number of accepted two-part presentations.  Please note that if all the presenters listed are first-time presenters, then the workshop must be limited to only one session.

Workshop Content:

Autism New Jersey is particularly interested in reviewing proposals that include empirical evidence and are targeted to an advanced audience. The committee is looking for workshops that instruct, inform and/or educate attendees about autism spectrum disorders and/or evidence-based practices.

Consistent with Autism New Jersey’s Position Statements on Treatment Recommendations and Information Dissemination, the agency will not accept applications on the following topics: Auditory Integration Training and other types of sound-based programs; Facilitated Communication; Psychoanalysis; Secretin; and any other interventions the agency deems unacceptable. Visit www.autismnj.org to view these position statements.

Although proposals may refer to specific organizations, products or services, the presentations described must be topical in nature.  Presenters may mention specific products or services only if they relate to the proposal.

If you plan to discuss any commercial products or services during your presentation, you will be asked to sign a disclosure statement prior to acceptance.  The lead presenter will be asked to explain the interest in or relationship with the manufacture(s) of any products or provider(s) of any of the services he/she intends to discuss.

Submission Requirements:

1.) Attach a 500-word summary of the presentation including empirical evidence for any treatments discussed.

2.) Provide a time-ordered outline for the presentation (example: 5 mins - Speaker introduction and audience assessment, etc.)

3.) Provide three specific, clear, and concise educational learning objectives that are both behavioral and measurable. You must state the learning objectives in behavioral terms that specify what the participants will do during the event or should be able to do after completing the event, rather than what the participants will “know” or what the instructor(s) will do. For example, an objective stating that “participants will write the main behavioral effects and side effects of 6 widely used psychoactive medications” would be appropriate. Objectives stating that participants will “gain knowledge of psychoactive medications” or that the purpose of the event is to “provide an overview of the effects of psychoactive medications” would not be appropriate.

4.) Provide a brief description (40 words or less) that includes any prerequisite knowledge needed by participants.

5.) Attach a bibliography, including three references from the last five years upon which the presentation is based.

6.) Attach a resume/CV for each presenter for each presenter listed on the proposal.

7.) Provide a brief biographical sketch (50 words or less) for each presenter listed on the proposal. Please note that bios are subject to editing before print.

8.) If this is the lead presenter's first time presenting at our Conference, attach a letter of recommendation from a supervisor (preferably) or someone very familiar with your work.  The letter should designate the author’s relationship to the proposed presenter and include the author’s view of the presenter’s knowledge level of the proposed workshop topic, presentation skills and ability to manage an audience.

9.) If this proposal was previously rejected, attach an addendum outlining proposal differences.
